Art Appreciation

Art Appreciation is the knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that characterise all great art.

As an artist, the more you appreciate and understand about the art from different eras, movements, styles and techniques, the better you can develop, evaluate and improve your own work. If your interest in art is simply for your personal enjoyment, a greater knowledge of art history and an understanding of pictorial elements, such as composition and technique, should increase your appreciation of art and enhance the pleasure you derive from looking at it.

The images above and links below lead to famous paintings, artists and artworks associated with various art movements and themes.

  • Each of our pages explores the history and offers an appreciation of the ideas behind an individual artwork or art movement.
  • The composition and technique of each artwork is analysed and evaluated.
  • Each of the artworks we have chosen has a link to the museum or collection that houses the original.
  • Each artwork or art movement is simply summarised by some bulleted notes at the bottom of each page.

We hope that our selection adds to your enjoyment and appreciation of great art.
