DEVELOPING
IDEAS IN GRAPHIC DESIGN
The
first ideas that you think of are not usually the most original.
The reason they are already in your head is because you
have seen them before in one form or another.
The
best ideas are those that you discover by trial and error
through composing your images and typography. There is a
range of standard composition techniques that you can use
to stimulate your ideas.
ABSTRACT
IDEAS

It
is always interesting to investigate the abstract properties
of a shape by exploring its potential as a pattern. It helps
you to become aware of the possibilities or limitations
for using that shape in a design.

Rotating
an image round a point provides the solution to a logo for
a set of audio visual CDs in a quiz game.

By
flipping and combining images we can use their abstract
form to suggest the path between the question and the answer.

A
modification to the question mark suggests a philosophical
approach to developing ideas in graphic design - "It
is not the answer that enlightens, but the question",
Eugene Ionesco.
THINK
OUTSIDE THE BOX

This
'punched' image suggests another approach to developing
ideas. It just needs a little help to improve the dialogue
between the visual to the verbal.

The
message is broken up into sections to improve its communication
with the image:
- 'think'
forms the missing curve from the question mark and together
they emphasise that part of the idea.
- 'outside'
is placed outside the image to stress its meaning.
- 'the
box' takes its natural position inside the box,
but on a smaller scale. This helps with the order in
which we read the message as we tend to read the larger
words first.

Red
and white are used
in a counterchange that unites the image and its typography.
Red strengthens the link between 'think' and 'outside'
to ensure that they are read first. White links to the inside
of 'the box' to complete the statement.
