DEVELOPING
IDEAS IN GRAPHIC DESIGN
The
first ideas that you think of are not usually the most original.
The reason they are already in your head is because you
have seen them before in one form or another.
The
best ideas are those that you discover by trial and error
through composing your images and typography. There is a
range of standard composition techniques that you can use
to stimulate your ideas.
CHARACTERISATION

A
cheerful combination of images lights up the darkness with
the personality of the product.

This
variation on the theme adds some humour to the idea with
a light bulb hairdo that advertises the product range.
TRANSPARENT
SHAPES AND COLOURS

Simple
overlays of transparent coloured shapes create a harmonious
visual effect but also say something about the nature of
the product.
OVERLAPPING
SHAPES

Two overlapping shapes framed by a hexagon are the the spark
of inspiration for a graphic design agency logo - 'Lightbox
Design' (a lightbox is a tracing frame used by graphic
designers).

A grey backdrop is used to increase the brightness of the
image while the jagged 'Matisse' font echoes the
points of the spark.

Graduated
tone is used to generate the form of the bulb and the glow
of light. The outlines of the box and light bulb are changed
to brighten the image while the outline of the font is substituted
by a drop shadow to lighten its weight.

Finally,
colour was applied to the design which, in turn, made the
backdrop redundant. The two tones of blue represent the
transparency of glass while a counterchange of red and yellow
illuminates the spark. The colours of the typography
were borrowed from the image to unify the design.
