DEVELOPING
IDEAS IN GRAPHIC DESIGN
The
first ideas that you think of are not usually the most original.
The reason they are already in your head is because you
have seen them before in one form or another.
The
best ideas are those that you discover by trial and error
through composing your images and typography. There is a
range of standard composition techniques that you can use
to stimulate your ideas.
STRUCTURAL
PATTERN

By
their nature, some images are ideally suited to building
structural patterns.
WELDING
IMAGES

Welding
is when you take two or more images and combine them to
create a single form. Welded images often suggest ideas
with layers of meaning.

'Refrigeration
Plant', a logo for a cold storage company, uses
a visual and verbal pun. The man combined with the snowflake
resembles a plant, not only a living organism but also another
name for a factory. One is a symbol of nature symbol while
the other is a symbol of technology. Like the stem supporting
its flower, the figure holds the snowflake aloft - a reference
to man's harnessing of the forces of nature.

A
triangular backdrop links the image and font. The triangular
shape also suggests an icicle, adding some extra chill to
the design.

The
design is coloured ice blue to further amplify the coldness
of the concept. Tonal counterchanges are added to contrast
each element of the logo.

Finally,
all the outlines are changed from black to white. This adds
a 'frostiness' to the image, more in keeping with the subject.
A subtle drop shadow was also applied to restore the legibility
of the lettering.
