DEVELOPING
IDEAS IN GRAPHIC DESIGN
The
first ideas that you think of are not usually the most original.
The reason they are already in your head is because you
have seen them before in one form or another.
The
best ideas are those that you discover by trial and error
through composing your images and typography. There is a
range of standard composition techniques that you can use
to stimulate your ideas.
THE
OUTSIDER

With
a simple adjustment to a pattern you can make a statement
about attitudes or behaviour.
A
COUNTERCHANGE OF TONES

A
counterchange of graduated
tones (light against dark changing to dark against light)
can add a spatial elegance to the most ordinary shapes.
A
COUNTERCHANGE OF SHAPES

A
counterchange of shapes, like the squares on a checkerboard,
results in a 'Morning Coffee' sign for a café.

The
idea was to frame the image with a background that represented
a café window. The 'Cooper Black' font was
chosen for its gently curved corners which harmonise with
the design.

The
arrangement of the image and background was altered to include
the text within the design. Now the background looks more
like a window while the cup of coffee sits comfortably in
the foreground.

Finally,
the type is swapped for the less formal 'Brush Stroke'
font whose calligraphic strokes set a more relaxed tone.
