TYPOGRAPHY
DESIGN LESSON 1
Typography
is the Art and Design of Printed Text.
In
this lesson we look at the elements that contribute to good
typographic design and then use that knowledge to create
a logotype (a logo composed of typography).
The
aim of this lesson is to explore the expressive potential
of typography.
The
task in this lesson is to create a logotype that reflects
a feature of Glasgow
Museums. The design is to be composed only from the
letters ‘GM’ and existing fonts. It should also
include the ‘municipal green’ colour of Glasgow.
This
lesson can easily be adapted to include any museum in any
locality.
Logotype
Design 1
Font:
ANASTASIA

This
logotype is designed using the condensed font, 'Anastasia'
whose height suggests the architectural pillars at the entrance
to many museums. The shadows represent the end of a pleasant
day spent there.
Logotype
Design 2
Font:
ARIAL BLACK

This
logotype is a transparent 3D projection which could be used
equally to advertise an arts exhibition about the cinema
or a science exhibition about the physics of light.
Logotype
Design 3
Fonts:
ENGLISH VIVACE, JAZZ

This
logotype uses two contrasting fonts to reflect the stylistic
and cultural diversity of the museum's exhibits. The classical
English Vivace is complemented by the ethnic Jazz font suggesting
a range to satisfy all tastes.
