TYPOGRAPHY
DESIGN LESSON 2
Typography
is the Art and Design of Printed Text.
In
this lesson we look at the elements that contribute to good
typographic design and then use that knowledge to create
a logotype (a logo composed of typography).
The
aim of this lesson is to explore the expressive potential
of typography.
The
task in this lesson is to create a logotype that reflects
a feature of Glasgow
Museums. The design is to be composed only from the
letters ‘GM’ and existing fonts. It should also
include the ‘municipal green’ colour of Glasgow.
This
lesson can easily be adapted to include any museum in any
locality.
Logotype
Design 4
Fonts:
ELEPHANT, OLD ENGLISH

This
logotype combines a modern and medieval font to represent
the range of historical exhibits that you could expect to
find in the museum.
Logotype
Design 5
Fonts:
AVANT GARDE, BRUSH FLAIR

This
logotype combines a formal geometric font for the 'G' with
a spontaneous calligraphic font for the 'M'. The combination
is used to suggest the idea of fun within a structured environment
- the format for most museums.
Logotype
Design 6
Font:
ALDO'S NOVA

This
logotype uses a modern font that has been coloured to suggest
stained glass windows - a craft that is associated with
the past. This combination of new and old links the present
with the past to reflect the range of historical exhibits
that you could expect to find in the museum.
