TYPOGRAPHY
DESIGN LESSON 3
Typography
is the Art and Design of Printed Text.
In
this lesson we look at the elements that contribute to good
typographic design and then use that knowledge to create
a logotype (a logo composed of typography).
The
aim of this lesson is to explore the expressive potential
of typography.
The
task in this lesson is to create a logotype that reflects
a feature of Glasgow
Museums. The design is to be composed only from the
letters ‘GM’ and existing fonts. It should also
include the ‘municipal green’ colour of Glasgow.
This
lesson can easily be adapted to include any museum in any
locality.
Logotype
Design 7
Font:
TOOLSHOPCAPS

This
logotype uses a novelty font that substitutes objects for
letters. The tools that represent the 'G' and 'M' could
be used to advertise an exhibition about industry.
Logotype
Design 8
Font:
AD LIB

This
logotype overlaps the bold 'G' and 'M' of the Ad Lib font
to create a dynamic interaction of shapes and space evocative
of abstract art.
Logotype
Design 9
Font:
VIVALDI

This
logotype uses a flamboyant font that is named after the
composer, Antonio Vivaldi. Its flowing calligraphic curves
recall the form a treble clef on a musical manuscript and
consequently suggest its ideal role - to advertise a musical
recital at the museum.
